Ramadan Health

Ramadan Health

The fast of Ramadan is rigorous, particularly during long summer days when it may be required to resist all food and drink for as many as sixteen hours at a time. This strain may be too much for people with certain health conditions.

The Qur'an instructs Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan, but also gives clear exemptions for those who may become ill as a result of fasting:
"But if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (of Ramadan days) should be made up from days later. For those who cannot do this except with hardship is a ransom: the feeding of one that is indigent.... Allah intends every ease for you; He does not want to put you to difficulties...." - Qur'an 2:184-185
In several other passages, the Qur'an instructs Muslims not to kill or harm themselves, or cause harm to others.Prior to Ramadan, a Muslim should always consult with a doctor about the safety of fasting in individual circumstances. Some health conditions may be improved during fasting, while others may possibly deteriorate. If you decide that fasting could possibly be harmful in your situation, you have two options:

Benefits of Ramadan

Benefits of Ramadan

Through fasting, a Muslim experiences hunger and thirst, and sympathizes with those in the world who have little to eat every day.

  • Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator, and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him.
  • Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings of generosity and good-will toward others. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said, "A man's wealth is never diminished by charity."
  • Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners, good speech, and good habits.
  • Through changing routines, Muslims have a chance to establish more healthy lifestyle habits -- particularly with regards to diet and smoking.

What is Ramadan?

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Because Islam uses a lunar calendar, Ramadan begins and ends at a different time each year. The way the lunar calendar works is that the beginning of each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. The lunar calendar is about 11 days shorter than the solar calendar used in much of the Western world. To learn more about the various calendars of the past and present, see Calendar Zone.
The start of Ramadan each year is based on a combination of sightings of the moon and astronomical calculations. In the United States, many Muslims adhere to the decision of the Islamic Society of North America on the start of the holiday. The end of Ramadan is determined in a similar way.

The Meaning of Ramadan

For Muslims, Ramadan is a month of blessing that includes prayer, fasting and charity. The meaning of Ramadan goes back many centuries, to about 610 A.D. It was at this time, during the ninth month of the lunar calendar, that Muslims believe God, or Allah, revealed the first verses of the Qu'ran, the holy book of Islam.

How Ramadan Works

How Ramadan Works

Every year, more than one billion Muslims around the globe observe the importance of the month of Ramadan. This time of the year is a time for reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims show their devotion to God by fasting, or abstaining from food.
Many religions encourage some kind of fasting for religious purposes. For instance, Catholics give up meat for Lent and Jews fast during the holiday of Yom Kippur. For Muslims, fasting is a very important component of Islam. The benefits of fasting for Ramadan are numerous. The most important, though, is the idea that through the self-control of fasting one can pay special attention to his spiritual nature.
Ramadan is an important time for Muslims, not simply because it helps develop a closer relationship with God, but also because Ramadan is a time to think about those who are less fortunate. Another goal of fasting for Ramadan is to experience hunger in sympathy for those without food. It is a way that many Muslims learn thankfulness and appreciation for what they have.
In this article, we will examine the meaning of Ramadan, the tradition of fasting, how the time of Ramadan is determined, Eid al-Fitr (the end of Ramadan) and the benefits of observing the holiday.

Ramadan About Ramadan

Top 5 tips for travel during Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak! With the Muslim holy month of Ramadan underway, now’s a good time to learn to say ‘Happy Ramadan!’ – especially if you’re considering travel at the end of July or during August to countries with majority Muslim populations, like indonesia, Egypt, turkeyand Morocco. With a few pointers, you can join a happy Ramadan already in progress.

1. Know the basics

Ramadan is a lunar month dedicated to sawm, or fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam. From sun-up to sun-down, the faithful abstain from food, drink, tobacco and sex to concentrate on spiritual renewal. After sunset, there’s a euphoric iftar, or meal, to break the fast, followed by a late-night feast and sahur, a meal before the sun comes up and fasting begins again. Yet Ramadan isn’t all daytime discipline and nightly parties: it’s a time of generosity and zakat, or charity, another of the five pillars of Islam. Fasting isn’t easy, so everyone slows down during the day – but you’ll also notice people going out of their way to extend small kindnesses.

The Reward for Good

The Reward for Good Husbands & Fathers

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful
Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an:
“And live with [them] in a beautiful manner. If you are then displeased with them, [then know] perhaps you dislike something which Allah has created abundant goodness in it (al-Qur’an 4:19 ).
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
The believer with the most perfect faith is the one who has best character and the one who is kindest to his wife (Sahih Muslim).
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
The believer should not harbor hatred towards his wife. If he dislikes something in her, then surely he will be pleased with another quality in her (Sahih Muslim).
Shaykh Asharaf Ali Thanwi said, commenting on the above verse:
“Brothers! when Allah has ordained these rights for women, then who can

10 Ways of

10 Ways of Developing Love for Allah

Adapted from Shaykh Ibn Qayyims (rah) Madarij-us-SaalikeenShaykh Ibn al-Qayyim (rah) says: The reason which cause mahabbah (love) of Allaah to develop, are ten:First: Reciting the Quraan, reflecting and understanding its meaning and its intent.Second: Drawing closer to Allaah the Most High through optional deeds, after fulfilling the obligatory duties.Third: Being continuous in the dhikr (remembrance) of Allaah, with the tongue, the heart and the limbs under all circumstances. The more continuant the dhikr, the more muhabbah develops and intensifies.Fourth: Giving precedence to what Allaah loves over personal loves, when being overcome by desires.Fifth: Contemplating and deliberating over the Names and Attributes of Allaah.Sixth: Recognizing and remembering the favors and bounties of Allaah both manifest and hidden.
Seventh: To be humble and submissive before Allaah and this is the greatest matter.

How Islam Fought

How Islam Fought Terrorism

While Caesar had sleepless nights, Umar (RA) slept under a tree without anyone guarding him.
The U.S. method of fighting terrorism by force, injustice, pre-emptive strikes, unilateral action and "regime change" only adds fuel to the fire. As witnessed by the recent world events.

The Bush administration has released a new National Security Strategy document which has been likened by the Moscow Times to Hitler's Mein Kampf, and described by the New York Times as Bush's "how I'll rule the world" blueprint.

This method which is used by Israel has only been devastating to both sides if measured in human cost, loss of freedom, psychological trauma and economic loss. The U.S. and the rest of the World will be expected to suffer similar losses when it mirrors the method used by Israel and Hitler as shown by the following statement from the Bush administration, "the only path to peace and security is the path of action". That is, the U.S. must wage a perpetual war, because without war there can be no peace If we compare this attitude with that of the Early Muslims who are considered the best generation, we find the following example of Caliph Omar.

The Battle

 The Battle of Uhud

The Qureshites came out from the Battle of Badr with an astonishing result which they did not expect. They were confident of their capability to annihilate the Muslims easily. For the Qureshites were more numerous and with a bigger reserve and more logistics. Yet, they suddenly found themselves losing seventy of their warriors and leaders, along with seventy captives, in a one-day battle. And above all, the resounding defeat which they received was at the hand of a group whom they used to belittle.
The Qureshites were unwilling to admit a final defeat. They lost a battle, but they believed that they would never lose the war. All they needed was to mobilize forces to which the Muslims would not be able to stand. The burning hatred in the hearts of Qureshites and their desire to wash away the shame of the defeat at Badr and their eagerness to avenge their lost leaders added to their physical superiority a tremendous psychological strength.

Activity Level Predicts

Activity Level Predicts Heart Disease in Women

New research suggests that a woman’s level of physical activity is a better sign than body weight of existing coronary artery disease and future heart problems. The study, which appeared in the September 8 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (2004; 292 [10], 1179–87), examined 906 women who had chest pain, suspected narrowing of the coronary arteries, or both. Researchers calculated each woman’s body mass index (BMI), and patients were categorized as normal weight, overweight or obese. In addition, the women answered a questionnaire that assessed their physical activity levels and abilities.

Milk pasteurization

Milk pasteurization promotes the growth of super germs, say scientists

(NaturalNews) Human interference with mother nature is always a bad idea, and new research has identified spore-forming bacteria that not only survives milk pasteurization, but are able to germinate as a result of the heat. Certain bacteria have the ability to form a tough, protective endospore which allows them to survive extreme conditions. Food scientists have identified Paenibacillus bacteria as the predominant spore-forming bacteria in milk.
Nature's ecosystem is involved in development of everything around us, and the different microorganisms have varying important functions. When we spray our soil with chemicals, use antibiotics, pasteurize food, etc. we damage this ecosystem and create a cascade of problems.

Philosophy

 Philosophy of Holistic Health Science

Life as we know it is possible and became possible because certain favorable conditions are and were present. Some of these conditions include favorable temperature, presence of oxygen and other gases and minerals, presence of water, absence of lethal substances, etc. Holistic Health Science is the study of all the conditions which make life possible. Because present-day life seems to be losing touch with those conditions which made life possible, Holistic Health Science brings us “back to our roots,” so to speak. We should endeavor to meet life’s requisites so that we can lead a joyous existence.Science is not the cold dispassionate pursuit many of us have been led to believe. Rather, it is personal, and relevant to all that we are involved in. When we turn our studies upon ourselves so that we may have a very personal science, we begin to arrive at the essence of Holistic Health Science.

The Religion Islam

Teachings and Beliefs of The Religion Islam

According to Islam every new born child is innocent. So there is no concept of “original sin”. People remain guiltless until they commit a sin on their own will. Islam is neither an ethnocentric nor a sacramental religion. The followers of this religion observe no sacraments.Anyone can convert to Islam by his/her own discretion. There has to be no need of any ceremony, involvement of sermonizer or any other thing. It is purely a matter between God and man. What a person needs to do is to accept that there is no God but Allah and prophet (PBUH) is the last Messenger of God and establish a firm belief in Holy Qur’an, Angels and the Day of Judgment.Every Muslim should accept the following doctrines of Islam:

Oneness of God:
Islam is a strictly monotheistic religion. The followers of Islam believe that there is no other God than Allah.
Existence of Angels: The throne of God is surrounded by Angels. They serve as His messenger to people. The most important of all angels is Gabriel. Iblis is a fallen angel, he is also referred to as the Satan or Devil. He has authority over the djinns who are male and female demons.

Holy Books:
The Muslims believe in the sacred books which include the Torah, the Gospel of Jesus, the Psalms, and the Qur’an. The followers of Islam believe that Qur’an is the only book which is completely error free. Those who memorize the whole book by heart and the deed of Quran Recitation are highly honored in Islam

Prophets:
According to the teachings of Islam, there are many people who are considered to be prophets. Among them are Abraham, Ishmael, Moses, Noah, John the Baptist, Jesus, and Mohammed. Mohammed is considered to be last prophet. His proclamations completed the message sent by God to people.

Day of Judgment:
Muslims believe that there will be a day of final judgment. At that time, the non-believers will be sentenced to the burning fires of hell, while the believers will enter heaven. However, the pleasures of heaven will be given to the believers according to the degree of faith and morality they displayed in their lifetime.

Women in Islam

 Women in Islam

Western propaganda has been very successful in portraying the misinterpreted image of women in Islam. They consider women as weak, oppressed and second class citizen in the eye of Islam. But the reality in not what is shown in the news, movies and stories. Muslim women got fair amount of rights and respect in society, Islam is the most revolutionary liberalization of women’s rights the civilized world has ever seen.
Think of the possibilities for liberalization based on purely Islamic sources, not taking anything from the modern West.
That would be truly Islamic value of women. The origin of Islam is far more liberal and feminist than what subsequent generations made of it. Women’s rights were established by the Qur’an and the Prophet (peace be upon him), who after all loved women; we need to filter out the spurious anti-woman hadiths that were added later. Although the term liberalism of women has developed a somewhat poisonous connotation in today’s sermon, it really just means the promotion of women’s God-given rights and liberties, which is to the

English Martial Arts

History of English Martial Arts – an article by Terry Brown, English Martial Artist.

England is not the first home of the English; their ancestral home which was known as Angeln, was situated on the mainland of continental Europe in an area that roughly corresponds to the southern half of present day Denmark. The Engle, as the English were then known, were a Germanic race so it is likely that their culture would have had something in common with that of other Germanic races who settled the region. It is therefore not unreasonable to suppose certain likenesses in the military skills of the early English and the methods of other early Germanic peoples of Western Europe. In this context it may then be possible to deduce, or infer, some knowledge of the military practices of the Engle (English) from classical sources such as Tacitus.

It is human nature to improve knowledge and hone skills, attitudes epitomised by martial artists. Each generation of martial artists will avidly absorb instruction from their teachers and then just as avidly pass it on to the next generation. It is likely that the martial knowledge of the English was passed from generation to generation in this way for centuries (as it was/is for example in China). In addition to inherited knowledge there would also have been imported knowledge resulting from, for example, the Danish and Norman

‘The Iron Duke

The Iron Duke’  1769 – 1852 (‘Old Hooky’)

‘The Iron Duke’ – The Duke of Wellington
Born in Ireland to aristocracy he famously said:
"Being born in a stable, does not make one a horse, so my fellow I’m an Englishman not Irish."
A true military commander, politician, and statesman. Affectionately known as ‘Hooky’ by his soldiers because of the shape of his nose. He returned the compliment once after an incident of looting by his troops, by calling them,‘the scum of the earth, enlisted only for drink.’ Yet an enemy would know that when they saw the Red coats of his troops they knew they were in for a hard fight. Often a single battalion would defeat a French division. He in turn commanded some very hard battlefield commanders such as Beresford, Picton, and others. Wellingtons army in the Napoleonic wars was one thing. Tough. He himself never lost his personal qualities of discipline, loyalty to England, and toughness.

Ensign to Field Marshall
Commander at the battles of Assaye, Porto, Salamanca, Vitoria, Toulouse, Talavera de Reina, the storming of Badajoz. Victor over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815.
Member of Parliament
British Prime Minister twice.
22 January 1828 – 16 November 1830
17 November 1834 – 9 December 1834

He is buried in St Paul’s Cathedral. His honours and legacies are too numerous to list. The crowds at his funeral were vast.

Alfred The Great c. 849 – 899

Great and Famous English People

 Alfred The Great c. 849 – 899 (AElfred)

Alfred the Great Alfred was the Anglo-Saxon King of Wessex. Famous for ‘burning the cakes’ when seeking refuge from the Vikings in Somerset. By 878 England was divided between the Danish Vikings and the Saxons who held the South West of England. Wessex. But after a long struggle in 896 the Danes submitted to the Saxons and Alfred effectively became the first English King. He set about reorganising the army known as the Fyrd and the Navy. Both the Royal Navy and the US Navy claim him as their founder. He married the Grand Daughter of the King of Mercia (central England,) and had as many as six children, one of whom was Princess Ethelfleda, a true English warrior Princess, who herself became a Queen. Her nephew and Alfreds grandson, King Athelstan of Wessex was another great Anglo-Saxon warrior who finally defeated the last Romano British at the bloody Battle of Brunanburgh giving all England to the Anglo-Saxons in 937. Thus England was born from these two great warriors.
Defender of England over many battles with the Vikings. King of the West Saxons, and King of all the Anglo-Saxons, Alfred is the only English monarch to be called ‘the Great.’
